Rule changes in youth leagues have led many coach-pitch bats to be labeled “junior big barrel.”
RawlingsGear.com carries an assortment of bats labeled either “coach pitch” or “junior big barrel” to make sure your child is using a bat that's legal in his or her league.
Rawlings' 5150 Junior Big Barrel bat (model number CP51A2) has a one-piece, 100 percent alloy frame with a 2-3/4" multi-wall, ultra-responsive barrel. It is available in 24- and 26-inch lengths.
Rawlings also has a 100 percent composite 5150 Coach Pitch bat (model number CP5150C) that is one piece with a 2-3/4" multi-wall, ultra-responsive barrel. It is available in 24- and 26-inch lengths.
For the 2011 season, Dizzy Dean leagues will not allow model number CP5150C. However, in July, Rawlings will release a -10 5150 Junior Big Barrel bat that will be approved for all leagues.
Always check with your child's league before purchasing a bat if you have any concerns about its legality.
Generally, coach-pitch bats are shorter and lighter than the average bat, with a large barrel designed for players 8 years old and younger. These bats have a 2-5/8” or 2-3/4” barrel diameter and a length-to-weight ratio between -10 and -12. These bats should be used exclusively in leagues in which the coach pitches to the players.
